GFOSS is a non-profit organisation of 38 members — universities, research centres and public-benefit bodies — working for a more open, collaborative and digitally independent society.

Mission

Promoting and developing open technologies in Greek education, the public sector, business and the social economy.

Vision

A Greece where knowledge is free, technology is open, and innovation is a common good that everyone can share.

Collaboration

A hub for knowledge and a platform for dialogue, built on the active participation of members, volunteers, businesses and the academic community.

International presence

An active member of European networks such as OGP, ODI, Open Forum Europe, FSFE, Creative Commons, the OSPO Alliance and the Eclipse Foundation.

Milestone

GFOSS is founded

Foundation of the Open Technologies Alliance (GFOSS) as a non-profit organisation promoting Free Software in Greece.

2013
Milestone

First policy proposals

Start of the systematic submission of letters and policy proposals to ministries, regions, municipalities and political parties.

2016
Milestone

Network & partnerships grow

Framework agreements with the City of Athens and the Ministry of Education. Launch of conferences and open-technology competitions in education.

2017–2020
Milestone

European programmes & international cooperation

Participation in Horizon 2020, Interreg MED and Erasmus+ with projects such as ODEON, +RESILIENT, PHYGITAL, SlideWiki and DUET. Greek ODI node, OGP member.

2020–2022
Milestone

Digital expansion

Continued activity through the pandemic — online MoodleMoot and FOSSCOMM conferences, workshops. MoUs with EKT, NTUA and the Hellenic Cadastre.

2023–2024
Milestone

New projects & AI

Launch of GR digiGOV-innoHUB, AI4Deliberation, S.T.E.P.S. and GlossAPI. MoU with the Ministry of Digital Governance. GSoC participation with 10 projects.

2025
Milestone

Growth & 38 members

MoUs with the Mozilla Foundation and the Linux Professional Institute. Launch of FOSSBot4AI (Erasmus+). GlossAPI continues for the Greek language in AI.

Governance & structure

How we operate

GFOSS is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the General Assembly of its 38 members. The Scientific Committee provides academic guidance, while 6 volunteer Working Groups carry out its work in the field.
